Perfection in the Workplace

What is your definition of perfection? Perfection in yourself, perfection with your performance, perfection in your team’s performance and perfection in your boss?

I paraphrase what Sheldon Bowles, friend of and co-author with Kenneth Blanchard, says about perfection in his foreword to Ken Blanchard’s book Zap the Gaps!

“Perfection exists when there is no gap between what is, and what should be.”

My quest for you this week is to look at a situation or challenge you are faced with that does not meet your standards or does not satisfy your expectations.

Explore the desired outcome.

  • What are the benefits to you, the company, the team or the process?

Now look at what exists. What is the “gap?”

Look at factors external to your process, factors internal to your process and factors internal to the people involved. Look for successes that already exist in each aspect.

  • How can you build on those to enhance the performance you and your team can deliver in order to narrow or close the gap?
  • What coaching do you need to do to get there?

A clear vision can help to see the actions needed to close the gaps.  A shared vision will motivate your team to take those actions.
